Bylong residents concerned over mining impacts on agriculture.

bylong_valley_cattleBylong, Australia – The small community of Bylong in the Upper Hunter is worried a proposed mine could ruin the region’s agricultural industry.

Cockatoo Coal has recently been meeting residents over the mining plans.

It is managing the project for owners Kepco, who want to build two open cut and one underground mine.

Cattle farmer Peter Grieve has witnessed the company purchase five neighboring properties and is concerned about those left.

“The community is no longer a community,” he said.

“It has been torn apart by the activity of coal in the area.”

Mr Grieve has questioned how irrigators and the coal mine can co-exist.
